Volker Turk, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, has conveyed his deep “shock” over remarks made by Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich (from the far-right) concerning the potential for starvation in Gaza. Turk’s reaction came after Smotrich’s comments during a seminar discussing Gaza’s future amidst the ongoing conflict with Hamas.

At the seminar on Monday, Smotrich stated that “no one globally would permit us to starve two million people, even though this might be deemed justifiable and ethical to secure the release of hostages” being held in Gaza since Hamas’s unexpected assault on Israel on October 7.

Turk has voiced his profound “shock and dismay” in response to these statements.
