On Friday morning, Turkey unexpectedly blocked access to Instagram, citing issues related to censorship. The move follows allegations by a high-ranking Turkish official that the platform was suppressing posts expressing condolences for the killing of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh.

The Turkish Information and Communications Technologies Authority announced the ban on its website but did not provide further details.

A representative from the authority told local media that the block was connected to "criminal content" that the platform was instructed to remove within a certain period.

Earlier in the week, Fahrettin Altun, head of the Turkish Presidential Communications Directorate, criticized Instagram for allegedly preventing users from sharing condolences for Haniyeh, the head of Hamas’ political bureau.
